"...the boys are all in good spirits and longing for a fight. I don't think there are many Cowards in this regiment."
"We are the Color Co and we never will forsake those Colors as long as we have a drop of blood left."
[Battle Kinston, Whitehall- Alfred] "We just arrived home from our Expedition...Color H Color Co lost the most men, four killed and eight wounded at the Battle of Kinston...Charles Ingram he was shot in the Stomach. I saw him fall but could not help him; "...it is awful to be on a field of Battle, the shell & balls whistling around you & groans of the dying..."
[Battle Kinston, Whitehall - Tom] "The 45th have been in two very hard fights....We fought them for about two hours in a swamp standing in black mud above our hips."; "The ball entered the left shoulder and lodged in lower flab of the left lung. [Elbridge Graves]"; "After the battle was over I went back to the battle field and the sights I saw are horrible to relate. I was short of rations and was obliged to rob the haversacks of the dead."
