Lot of (7) handwritten letters home from soldiers in Massachusetts 45th Infantry - gunsmith Alfred Howard Kinsley of Co. "H" and Thomas Kinsley of Co. "A" (appears to be brother.)

Exciting content, about 28pp total, written from Camp Amory, Newbern, NC from Nov. 1862 - Jan. 1863. Legible pencil.

Content, Excerpts:

"...the boys are all in good spirits and longing for a fight. I don't think there are many Cowards in this regiment."

"We are the Color Co and we never will forsake those Colors as long as we have a drop of blood left."

[Battle Kinston, Whitehall- Alfred] "We just arrived home from our Expedition...Color H Color Co lost the most men, four killed and eight wounded at the Battle of Kinston...Charles Ingram he was shot in the Stomach. I saw him fall but could not help him; "...it is awful to be on a field of Battle, the shell & balls whistling around you & groans of the dying..."

[Battle Kinston, Whitehall - Tom] "The 45th have been in two very hard fights....We fought them for about two hours in a swamp standing in black mud above our hips."; "The ball entered the left shoulder and lodged in lower flab of the left lung. [Elbridge Graves]"; "After the battle was over I went back to the battle field and the sights I saw are horrible to relate. I was short of rations and was obliged to rob the haversacks of the dead."

"Captain Tappan is a Coward. He went to the rear of his Company at Kinston."

"Some of our Wounded in our own Company did not have the Balls taken out of them till yesterday"

"I told you about Sergeant Parkmans death...he was struck in the head with a Cannonball."

"Two spies have been captured here...by the 51st Regiment out on Picket. They were very saucy & will get death for there trouble."
