This is a March 27th, 1862 Civil War Letter from Hilton Head SC Fine Descriptions of Patrols and Skirmishing by the 3rd NH Volunteersthe First Units Up the Harbor River as far asBluffton, SC. It was written to S. Henry Sprague, Quarter Master, 9th NH Vols. This first person Description of a patrol in force by some 600 soldiers is clear, concise, detailed and all around beautifully written and describes several instances of fighting with Confederate soldiers.

This is a portion of the letter transcribed,

\"Were called up at two o\'clock next morning and loaded into boats(after having loaded our guns). Just as it was growing light, the Colonel came along side our boat and told us to strip our jackets and get ready for action. Soon afterwards we came in sight of some rebel pickets beside the river. Our boats were all steered for the shore. The rebels stood there watching us until we were about a quarter of a mike from them then fired their guns at us and left, as we expected to alarm their camp and thought very likely they would be down on us before we could secure a landing and get a line formed. The boats struck where the water was nearly waist deep. To get out of the boats made(sic) ashore and get our lines formed occupied the space of about two minutes I should think. We were ordered forward Double Quick...\"

And so on for two days. No major actions for sure buta wonderfully detailed and literate description of a patrol in force skirmishing with Confederate forces and briefly taking Bluffton.By the way, these letters and such are all coming from a huge lot of Civil War Era Letters( like 350 of them) that I bought the other day. Normal CW letter sized. This is in great condition, crisp and unstained from having been stored in a small trunk with bunch of other letters for about 175 years. I can\'t read the signature

Absolutely guaranteed to be original and as described.
