Posted Jul 25, 1862 Ft. Hamilton. Soldier addresses the letter \"Fort Lafayetta July 24, 1862\".Fort Lafayette guarded NY harbor - today, on it\'s foundations, stand the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.Soldier posted letter to Miss Olivia A Hinman. Bristol Iowa. The letter is two pages, but likely had another page. Soldier\'s name is not stated, but he addresses his letter to \"Dear Sister\".
There was a Hinman family that moved to Bristol Iowa around the beginning of the Civil War, from Vermont. So perhaps this soldier\'s last name was also Hinman - perhaps from Vermont, or Iowa, depending on where he enlisted from. He does refer to a \"Ben\", who is as fat as old Beals - (perhaps this Ben was a Benjamin Beals?). He then refers to a John V H Bealle has now arrived here, and he wonders how John and Salome settled matters.
There may be enough detail to determine the soldier. Still, very fine patriotic cover and patriotic letterhead. Condition is very good. Guaranteed genuine as described. Registered APS Dealer.
