This token was made from salvaged iron armour plating taken from the wreck of the Confederate ironclad warship CSS Virginia, better known as the Merrimac. Merrimac fought in the first battle between ironclad warships at Hampton Roads in 1862 against the USS Monitor during the Civil War. She became corned in the James River, and was scuttled there by her crew. Later salvaged, much of the metal raised from the wreck was purchased by the Old Dominion Iron & Nail Works of Richmond, Va who made various relic out of the ships armored plates. These relics and curios were sold at the Jamestown Exposition of 1907.
