This is a first edition Casey\'s Infantry Tactics Vol I written by US Army Brigadier General Silas Casey and published by D Van Nostrand, New York in 1862. For the instruction, exercise and maneuvers. The soldier, a company, line of skirmishers, battalion, brigade. 279 numbered pages. Great for re-enactors to use for authentic formations and movements. Also contains Beats of the Drum and Sounds of the Bugle sheet music to recreate the \"music\" of the battlefield. Owned by Second Lieutenant James W Converse Jr. of Massachusetts Infantry (Militia) 47th Regiment, Company K in November 1862. I found the photo and history about him on these sites. He probably received this book as a gift for being promoted after The Battle of New Bern (North Carolina), during the Burnside Expedition, when he was in the 24th Regiment. After receiving it he departed with the 47th to New Orleans and played a key role in its defense during the Siege of Port Hudson.
