This is an authentic 1862 Civil War document signed by The Secretary of War Edwin McMasters Stanton. Stanton became famous because of his tremendous will to win and hewas hired and worked for the even more famous President Abraham Lincoln. Stanton worked faithfully day and night with Lincoln to win the Civil War. Much is written on the internet about these two men and I encourage buyers to do their own research aboutEdwin McMasters Stanton and his prominence.
One of Stanton\'s many jobs was to find the right people to fill the many positions in the War department. Thisis the official War Department letterhead letter informing a person of his appointment to one of those positions. This letter mentions that President Lincoln did the appointing and Stanton did the informing. He called it a commission. The candidate would thengive a response with pertinent information and report for duty.
In this particular letter, Stanton informed a Captain William S. Dodge that he was appointed Commissary of Subsistence in the US Volunteers. Dodge was then instructed to report to the Commissary General by letter. This is the way I see the letter.
The focus of this letter is, of course, the signature of a famous and important CivilWar character, Edwin McMasters Stanton;a close confidant of President Abraham Lincoln. Many have said that without Stanton advising President Lincoln, the war would have drug on for a longer period of time.
The letterhead has vertical and horizontal folds, two dog ears and yellowing. There are two distracting ripped holes (see photos) with paper missing on the front page. There are taped repairs on the back of the printed page and on page four. There are four small edge tears at the horizontal folds. Other small wrinkled areas.Even with all of these condition issues, the signature is unscathed. No damage at all. The signature is crisp and clear written in black ink. Not printed by machine. Hand written by Stanton himself. Its different ink than theink used to fill in the document. I compared authentic confirmed signatures from reliable sources and this is a real signature of Edwin McMasters Stanton. This document has been in storage for decades in my own private collection.
