Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was a German-born American caricaturist and editorial cartoonist who is considered to be the \"Father of the American Cartoon\". He is credited with the modern version of Santa Claus and the political symbol of the elephant for the Republican Party. Nast provided illustrations for the highly successful Harper\'s Weekly from 1859 to 1860 and from 1862 until 1866. He was known for drawing battlefields in the Southern States. Abraham Lincoln called him \"our best recruiting sergeant\".
