This is a great 4 page letter from Pittsfield, Massachusetts from 1863 sent to a soldier in Louisiana. It is handwritten and has great content and says in part:


I should think the nine months men had experienced some hardships and given their lives in battle as well as the three years men, perhaps they would like to come home as their time has expired and who blames them. We are having trouble almost at our own doors a severe fight has taken place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania our forces drove the rebels four miles from their position and was following them up that was Friday. Fifteen hundred more prisoners were taken a great many officers were killed among our forces the loss on both sides was great it is reported General Longstreet was killed most likely he will turn up somewhere yet, like Stonewall Jackson our men have always wanted the rebels to meet them on our own soil and now they have it and I hope they will conquer them entirely, it was said Lee had nearly all his army between Cashtown and Gettysburg may this by the last of him and his army, the last of Secesh…
