Very rare Civil War item in remarkable condition. Small 4 1/4 x 2 7/8 inches. Paper covered boards, black cloth spine. A few light abrasions, spots and stains to covers and endpapers. Intact and firmly bound. 64pps incl index, complete per Library of Congress copy (see worldcat). Light staining to covers, lightly toned pages but remarkably clean and bright with intermittent light foxing/spotting. Antique thin blue paper loosely inserted with text of poem \"I Die a True American\", inspired by the alleged words of famous nativist and New York gang-leader Bill (\"the Butcher\") Poole upon his death in 1855 (made famous by Daniel Day Lewis\' portrayal in Martin Scorcese\'s Gangs of New York). This small book was published by the Boston Young Men\'s Christian Association (YMCA), printed by George C. Rand & Avery, Boston, and shows date of January 16, 1863 at end of preface, consistent with Library of Congress copy. Contents include such treasured hymns as The Lord\'s Prayer, the Star Spangled Banner, America, The Union Forever, Christ Over All and many others.

Text on rear cover:THE BOSTON YOUNG MEN\'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION, in entering upon the new field of labor opened by Providence among the soldiers of the United States army, desires to do all in its power to supply the religious wants of our brave defenders, and will be most happy to become the medium of communication between them and their friends; or in any other practicable way, will cheerfully labor to mitigate the inconveniences and diminish the deprivations incidental to life in the camp. The Association has appointed an \"Army Committee,\" consisting of the undersigned, to supervise its operations in connection with this branch of duty.
