Offered here is an interesting Civil War soldier\'s letter written and signed by Judson, a Union IX Corps infantryman, \"on board Steamer Armada, Mississippi River,\" to his sister, Mary Ann. Written on June 10, 1863, the letter describes the sights Judson saw while he and the rest of the IX Corps steamed down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers on their way to join Grant\'s Army of the Tennessee. He wrote:
Steaming down the \'Father of Waters.\' We have just past Fort Randolph and will reach Memphis by this afternoon--we came on board the evening of the 8th our Regt one half of the Six N.H., the Col.Comd Brigade & Staff, Brigade Band, and Paymaster. At 9 am of the 9th we passed out of the mouth of the Ohio in to the Miss and since that time have past Ky. and Missouri and now we are passingTen. and ArKansas. Yesterday we passedColumbus Ky and Island No 10, of which so much was written, and inregard to the battle that took place there...it is now populated and defended by a fewthousand Contrabands. I must confess I am disappointed in the size of the river and the objects of interest along the banks as one stands upon thedecks a half hour he will see about all he wants of the Miss--the scenery ismonotonous--most of the shore is covered with a dense growth of wood--so thick that it would seem impassable and has all the appearance of a country upon which the foot of man has never trod...The river winds about like some huge serpent--at hardly any point can you see but a few miles--either before or behind.
The letter is in very good condition andwas written upon three pages of a 7 1/2\" x 9 3/4\" bifolium stationery sheet. The remaining unused paper was removed at some point for another purpose. There are creases at the locations of theoriginal folds. The paper is in excellent sturdy condition, not stiff, and not delicate. Light wear to edges and corners.
