HISTORIC CIVIL WAR ERA1863 \"GEORGE WASHINGTON 3 CENT, REDESIGNED STAMP, POSTMARKED: \"MEMPHIS - JAN 241863, TEN.\" ADDRESSED TO: \"Mrs Margaret H. Peters, Kenosha, Wisconsin\"ON HISTORICCOVER: For sale a historiccover that was postmarked during the civil war at Memphis,TNin January 1863,has normalaging , 152 years, no contents. Please note, Memphis, Tennessee was an \"occupied\" territory at this time during the Civil War. Capture of Memphis and Nashville gave the Union control of the Western and Middle sections of the state. Control was confirmed at the battle of Murfreesboroin early January 1863. After Nashville was captured (the first Confederate state capital to fall) Andrew Johnson, an East Tennessean from Greenville, was appointed military governor of the state by Lincoln. During this time, the military government abolished slavery (but with questionable legality). On January 1, 1863 Abe Lincoln had just issued the \"Emancipation Proclamation\". December 31st, 1862 - January 3rd, 1863 The Battle of Stones River was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the Civil War with casualties reaching at total of nearly 24,000. This Union win opened up a penetration point and corridor into the south which ultimately provided the opportunity for Sherman\'s March to the Sea. February 3rd, 1863 The Battle of Dover took place. Commanding two brigades of cavalry, Confederate Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler sets out to Dover in an attempt to disrupt Union shipping along the Cumberland River. The attempt fails and leaves the Union in control in Middle Tennessee. Many more skirmishes would be fought here during this U.S. Civil War. It would be interesting if this cover had the letter. Was it from a Union soldier writing home, addressed to his wife or maybe his mother? Nevertheless it is a nice historical artifact!

The cover features the newly redesigned 3c Washington stamp, all U.S. stamps issued prior to 1862 were declared \"worthless\" due to the fact that stamps were considered currency. This was done to thwart the Confederate States of America from exchanging stamps in secessionist post offices for U.S.coin currency. In fact this was the only time in U.S.history that stamps were demonetarized becauseuntil 1963stamps could be exchanged for currency. A legacy from the Civil War that lasted until 1963. In factold mail order catalogs like SEARS, etc. would accept stamps for payment since checking accounts werenot available to all Americans. Also, fractional purchases for an item that cost 25c or 50c could more easily be paid for with postage stamps ratherthan mailing coins. Even now older stamps still can be exchanged but only for new stamps. This historic Civil Warerapostal relicwould look handsome in a museum style frame or Riker Box with other items of the era.
