Manuscript letter by the treasurer of West Cambridge, Massachusetts, appointing two men to ascertain the status of local men thought to have engaged in the Battle of Gettysburg, and provide for their needs. Octavo, 3 pp, on ruled paper. Ink and pencil. Creased along fold lines, with partial separations. In part:
Treasurer\'s Office, Town of CambridgeCounty of MiddlesexState of MassachusettsJuly 7th, 1863
Messrs. Samuel G. Damon and Arthur Poland.
Gentlemen, If it be possible will you please ascertain if the following named soldiers belonging to this Town have met with any casualties in the late battles and if so will you for the Town of West Cambridge afford them any assistance and relief they may need or if so disabled as to be discharged or furloughed see them provided with means to carry them safely home; and the Town of West Cambridge will indemnify you for all expenses incurred. Will the Military & Civil authorities afford Messrs. D & P the needed papers to enable them to fulfill their mission.Abm. R. These are a few W. Cambridge Boys in Co. H. 40th Regt. N.Y. Vols. 3 Corps. 1 Div. E. Snow among them is a clerk at the Brigade Head Quarters in Medical Department; find him & he will (?) you -- he is a nephew of Addison Gage, Esq. If you can find General Birney\'s Head Quarters you can then hear of the 40th & Snow 3 Corps. Dr. Underwood is at Fort Delaware, Delaware City. Dr. Henry M. Field is at Washington. Miss. Nancy M. Hill daughter of Wm. Hill of Belmont is nurse at Armory Hospital, Washington in Ward G.
Goes on to list approximately 30 soldiers, their names followed by units.
On the back are penciled notes, including a chart of each corps badge, and the insignia of officers. More names are listed but without their significance.
