Condition:
Medium to rich tonal image, shows aging, mount lightly soiled with aging, edges rubbed, penciled number on war era stereoview picturing a statue titled “Mail Day” by John Rogers. Rogers had quite a bit of success with his Civil War statues including “Country Postoffice: News from the Army” as well as depictions of soldiers and Civil War leaders. He felt that this piece, “Mail Day” would complement the “Country Postoffice” and it received critical acclaim in the New York Times as the best of the Civil War groups. The public, however, didn’t seem to agree and it was not produced in as large a number as others making it a less common piece.
The stereoview notes that it is “From Haughwout & Co’s Collection.” E.V. Haughwout was a longtime New York merchant who carried the finest of items for a devoted clientele, no doubt including John Rodger’s statues.
