July 24th, 1864 dated letter from Adairsville, GA of 5 pages from Michigan Soldier to his wife of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The envelope is postmarked Chattanooga, Tenn Jul. 18, 1864. \"We are chopping wood for the railroad for which we get $1.00 for a cord. I am not able to chop yet. Just got over dysentery . We have a fine camp here in a good country and good water. Have a good chance to see the Rebel Prisoners as they pass along on the Cars. The cars stop here and we frequently talk with them, they are about tired of fighting, they are a dirty looking set of men but look tough and healthy, etc. \" he is selling his excess rations to the locals. \"Heard that Atlanta is taken by Sherman and that Old Abe has called for 500,000 more men, etc. The letter is stained because he sent a flower he picked in a field to her with it. The flower is not present. The letter is written in pencil and is legible but a little light in places. Shipping includes insurance.
