Here is the original 1866 edition of Cross’ Masonic Text Book. Jeremy L. Cross, a pupil of prominent Freemason Thomas Smith Webb, published in 1819 the True Masonic Chart of Hieroglyphic Monitor on which he borrowed liberally from the previous work of Webb whose modifications of the Preston Lectures and of the advanced Degrees were generally adapted by the Freemasons of the United States.
Having been highly popular, Cross’ chart went through a series of revisions to more accurately portray the craft of Freemasonry. The revisions performed here by William M. Cunningham were said to better conform to the ancient work, well adapted to any known Ritual of the York Rite and adapted in every particular to the Rituals in use for various state Masonic lodges.
In all ages is has been the object of Freemasonry, not only to inform the minds of its members by instructing them in the sciences and useful arts, but to better their hearts by enforcing the precepts of religion and morality. An often highly guarded and secretive society, the fraternal brotherhood of the Freemasons remains a subject of wild fascination for historians, scholars, and general enthusiasts alike.
Superseding Webb, it was Cross’ Text Book delivers in a single volume the vast history of the craft from Masonic Initiation rituals in the various degrees from Entered Apprentice to the Order of the High Priesthood, along with Symbols, Grips, handshakes, secrets, and regalia.
The later chapters include the constitution of the General Grand Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, the Orders of the Red Cross, Knights Templars, and Knights of Malta, and Masonic Odes. Profusely illustrated throughout, it was Cross’ work that made first use of pictured emblems as an aid to monitorial instruction including the earliest images of the Masonic all-seeing eye.
