As regards restoration, leather starts failing after 100 years depending on usage. Any large Victorian Bible exceeding this age almost invariably will need the front and back covers reattached to the body of the Bible using new leather.

On display is a unique copy of an 1868 Old and New Testament Bible with Apocrypha.The date was hard to find but was listed on the wedding license in the middle of the Bible and it is pictured above. The main title page is missing but the New Testament title page is shown above.It contains a massive amount of informationincludinga Chronological Index, a Table of Time, A Table of Offices and Conditions of Menand much, much more. Foxing is present throughout as shown in the pictures above, all of which is an expected condition of age. In addition there are some watermarks showing in the first portion of the Bible but interestingly enough it stops before Genesis starts and does not reoccur. A photo above shows it. It does notinterfere with the text.

The Bible has had the front and back cover as well as spine professionally reattached. The original spine was able to be saved and has been reattached in order to preserve the integrity of the Bible. Please check photos to verify. The covers show beautiful 24 karat gold leaf Holy Bible printed on front and back with deep inlay scenes embossed into the covers. Holy Bible is inlaid on the spine as well as front and back covers. The spine shows 5 raised bands.The color is a beautiful deep, deep mahogany almost black color scheme with the gold embossing set against it. Gold gilt page edging is present albeit with a gently faded luster that time and the centuries have bestowed upon it.

This is a unique example of a Victorian Bible and while not having checked every page it does appear to becomplete. It measures 12 1/2\" x 10 1/2 \" x 3 1/2\". This is a very large family bible weighing just under 10 pounds. There is no family history present andthe area for it is located in the middle of the Bible. It is of course used and does show the expected wear and tear associated with its age. This Bible has had a interesting and challenging life and as such is being sold as is and at a very low starting price. Please examine pictures carefully. That being said, it is still a massive compilation filled with an incredible amount of information and magnificent illustrations.

This is an incredible opportunity to own a piece of history in the form of an authentic Victorian Bible printed in the 1800\'s. It would make an exellent display piece that could be opened to any of the magnificent pictures inside, or Title Pages, or left closed to show the spectacular gold inlay covers.
