Description Check it out...Here\'s a classic 9\" wide by 13\" tall by 1/4\" deep colorful diecut wooden shield shaped plaque with an ORIGINAL donation certificate dated 1869 from the effort to pay for Abraham Lincoln\'s tomb in Springfield, Illinois just 4 years after he was assassinated-The plaque was owned by the family of William H. Hodge, former Sheriff of Tazewell County from 1827 to 1831 with ties to Abraham Lincoln himself! The certificate features a VINTAGE image of Lincoln\'s tomb (as yet unbuilt) titled \"National Lincoln Monument Springfield, Illionois 1869. This Certifies that William H. Hodge (written in ink) has contributed Fifty Cents to the erection of a Monument in memory of Abraham Lincoln, our Martyred President. Springfield, Ill. 1869 J.H. Beveridge\" on the front-The plaque is in good condition with expected wear consistent with age and normal use- The certificate has been \"decoupaged\" onto the front of the wooden plaque as was the style in the Victorian Era but it is cool to think that this probably had deep meaning to Sheriff Hodge and was displayed in a place of honor in his home back in the early years after the Civil War- I have included a photo (Just a photo, I DO NOT have the original and it is NOT included with the item but feel free to print it off should you win the item) of Hodge\'s official commission as Sheriff and you can see it was signed / presented by Illinois Governor and Lincoln family friend Ninian Edwards, so there surely was a connection between Lincoln and Hodge back in the day- Further research could prove fruitful on this item-

Here is some info on Sheriff Hodge:

William Herron Hodge (1794-1875) was born to Francis Hodge and Nancy Walker in North Carolina January 4, 1794. Largely taking his education in his own hands, William was advanced enough by his eighteenth birthday to teach, doing so in Tennessee and Kentucky. In 1820, William traveled west and by February of that year had arrived in Sangamon County, Illinois. In 1824 he moved to Blooming Grove and bought land-at that time only 12 other families lived in the area. William assisted in the formation of Tazewell County in 1827 and McLean County in 1831. He was sheriff, collector and assessor of Tazewell County from 1827 to 1831. William Hodge married Rachel Wall of Kentucky in 1814 and had 10 children, 6 of whom were still living in 1879 (O. N. Hodge, Nancy, William C., Mary J., James P., and Harriet). James P. (born January 9, 1834) married Ellen Rouse Hodge (born 1839), and their daughter Dottie married into the Read family. William H. Hodge passed away April 9, 1875.  William Hodge was Sheriff of Tazewell County, Illinois from 1827-1831. His official 1827 certificate / document as Sheriff was issued by Illinois Governor Ninian Edwards. Edwards was Abraham Lincoln\'s brother-in-law. Abraham and Mary Lincoln were married in the Ninian Edwards home in 1842.

Terms of Sale

I try and place a penny in every photo to help judge the size of the item, obviously it is there for size comparison and is not included with the item. The standard sized Lincoln head penny in the photograph is there for size comparison ONLY and is not included in the package. We\'re just trying to help you figure out how big the item is. We try and always be as accurate as we can in the item description and will gladly answer any question about item size & description when needed. Please e-mail us with any questions BEFORE the end of sale and BEFORE placing a offer. Postage is determined by the U.S. Postal service and is never refundable. Many of the items are VINTAGE and although they are in very fine condition, they may not function as well as when they were made decades ago. So if you intend on using the old item, please be aware that we are selling it for collector value only. In other words, if you intend on using a 50+ year old letter opener and it breaks, don\'t get mad at us. It may be hard to believe, but we have received a couple negatives because people broke vintage items while trying to use them.
