Co-founder and first President American Geological Society.A gifted lecturer, he was an evolutionary theist. He viewed Darwin’stheory of evolution through a geological perspective, and believed in some ofDarwin’s ideas, agreeing that man existed before the historical time periodthat Adam supposedly existed, but argued science from the Christian perspective(i.e., natural theology). In this letter, he turns down a request towrite an article and suggests another professor as a replacement. Hewrites, in part: \"... while I should enjoy the preparation of the articlesreferred to, my hands are already so full of business that I am almost dailydeclining additions to my duties & must decline this request also.Pro. W. J. Beal of Chicago Univ. of Mich(igan) Agric(ulteral) College, would, Ithink, do well & could make it an object of ambition to do credit to thePeriodical and to himself... A. Winchell.\"
