1870 Handwritten Civil War Vets Diary Elmira Chemung New York/85th Ny Regiment For Sale
1870 HANDWRITTEN CIVIL WAR VETERANS DIARY
----------------------
I am always pleased to offer diaries that are written by Veterans of the American Civil War. It's amazing to me to think about what these Soldiers endured while fighting, and and the emotional scars many of them must have carried through their lives following the War.
The Civil War Veteran who wrote this diary was a member of the 85th INFANTRY REGIMENT, NEW YORK. This is an actual, authentic handwritten diary, it is not a copy or reproduction! This AMAZING INCREDIBLE 143 YEAR OLD handwritten antique diary / journal / manuscript book was written just five years after the American Civil War ended by a young man who was named JACOB V. SHAPPEE. He was born March 8, 1841, and his parents were Mary Van Gorder & Guy Maxwell Shappee. His siblings were: Ira ~ Martha ~ Maxwell ~ Jessee ~ Clarissa ~ Anna Mary. He was from the town of ELMIRA, CHEMUNG COUNTY, NEW YORK. He married Fannie J. Klock on April 14, 1863, and they had a daughter, Essie, born in 1889. Jacob enlisted in Big Flats, New York on September 9, 1864, and was a member of the 85th Infantry Regiment, New York. Here is a link that tells about was mustered out of service on June 27, 1865 at New Berne North Carolina.
Jacob came from a very patriotic family, two of his brothers also enlisted in the Civil War .... His brother, Maxwell, enlisted in Company 14 New York Infantry in the Army of the Potomac, and was wounded in the right hip at the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, July 20, 1864. His brother, Ira, enlisted in 1862, and was a member of the 50th Engineers Regiment New York.I will be including to the winning buyer, copies of the Civil War & Census records that I found while reseaching Jacob. This is a VERY RARE One-Of-A-Kind Window Into New York & American History !!!Jacob Shappee filled this diary with his handwritten entries! He writes of his work as a leather tanner, and of his life in Elmira, NY. And of course he writes of his wife and other family members as well. He writes of local news and of many accidents to people in the community, and of the Negroes having a celebration. He writes of going to watch a Circus coming into town, and of attending G.A.R. meetings ... And there is much more! This is a wonderful piece of Americana !!!
This wonderful early diary has 364 handwritten entries, plus additional notations on the back pages including G.A.R. notes, and income & expenses. it measures approx. 3" x 5 3/4" and it has no loose or missing pages, and the entries are handwritten in ink. Tucked between the pages is a 1879 receipt, from Jarvis Klock and signed by Geo Brower.
