On offer is a stereoview albumen silver print image by Howard A. Kimball titled, “Orphan’s Home, Webster Place, Franklin, N.H.”. Condition is evident in photos posted below—overall in great condition for its age. Howard Kimball (along with his brother, W.G.C. Kimball) had an excellent reputation in Concord, N.H., as a photographer. In 1896, Kimball published an article in the book titled, “Photographic Mosaics,” which featured beautiful Kimball images of the interiors of steamers as well as his story of the technical difficulties he and his brother encountered when photographing the interiors of these once magnificent steamers. There is more historical content on Kimball that is worth researching.
The Orphan home depicted in this stereoview also has quite a history. In 1871, the property was acquired by the New Hampshire Orphans’ Home, for $10,000. At first, the connected wooden Webster and Tay houses, together with the Webster farm buildings to the west, constituted the full facilities of the orphanage. During the first two years of its operation, the institution accommodated sixty-two orphans in these buildings.
