1873 NATIVE AMERICAN APACHE INDIAN STEREOVIEW PHOTO By TIMOTHY O\'SULLIVAN:

Rare and original 1873 Native American Apache Indian Stereoview Photograph from the Wheeler Expedition known as \"Geographical and Geological Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian\" picturing three Apache Braves in native dress taken by the great Civil War and Western Photographer Timothy O\'Sullivan. This wonderful, original, oversize, rounded corner / flat mount stereo photo measures approx. 6 7/8\" x 3 7/8\" and is mounted on its original, yellow surface Photographer\'s mount. On the front it is identified as being from the \"Expedition of 1873 / 1st Lieut. Geo. M. Wheeler, Corps of Engineers Commanding.\". On the reverse there is printed text on an applied label that identifies the image as No. 33 and titled \"Apache Indians, as they appear ready for the war-path\". The photographer is identified as T. H. O\'Sullivan.

The stereoview pictures the Apache Braves dressed in loin cloths and tunics. One is holding a lance, one a bow and arrow and the third a percussion rifle. They are photographed on the open plain with low mountains in the background.

Apache is the collective term for several culturally-related groups of Native Americans in the United States originally from the Southwest United States. Apachean people formerly ranged over Eastern Arizona, northern Mexico, New Mexico, west and southwest Texas, and southern Colorado. The Apachería consisted of high mountains, sheltered and watered valleys, deep canyons, deserts, and the southern Great Plains. The Apachean groups had little political unity; the major groups spoke seven different languages and developed distinct and competitive cultures. The current division of Apachean groups includes the Navajo, Western Apache, Chiricahua, Mescalero, Jicarilla, Lipan, and Plains Apache (formerly Kiowa-Apache). Today Apache groups live in Oklahoma and Texas and on reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. The Apachean tribes fought the Spanish and Mexican peoples for centuries. The first Apache raids on Sonora appear to have taken place during the late 17th century. In 19th-century confrontations, the U.S. Army found the Apache to be fierce warriors and skillful strategists

The official purpose of the Wheeler Survey was to examine the topography, natural resources, and man-made features of the territory, and to prepare detailed maps for both military and general use. But his military superiors made it clear that Wheeler was to pepper his report with support for the Army\'s work in thwarting the dangers of the Southwestern Indian Tribes and their attempts at disturbing settlers and travelers alike. In his final Report Wheeler was expected to make it clear that without the continued and extensive Military presence throughout the Southwest, the Native American Indians still posed a grave danger to peace and prosperity.

This very rare and wonderful, original stereo image is in excellent, original condition. The focus is sharp but the contrast strong and the tonality rich. The images are clean and crisp and the stereo effect is strong when examined through a stereoscope. The card mount has some light soiling and light edge wear.

A very rare and fascinating, 1873 Southwestern United States, Native American Indian Stereo Photograph of Apache Braves by Timothy O’Sullivan and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
