1874 WESTERN AMERICANA STEREOVIEW PHOTO OF BEAVER LAKE By TIMOTHY O\'SULLIVAN:

Rare and original, 1874 Western Americana Stereoview Photograph from the Wheeler Expedition known as \"Geographical and Geological Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian\" featuring a fantastic view of Beaver Lake in Conejos Canyon, Colorado taken by the great Civil War and Western Photographer Timothy O\'Sullivan. This wonderful, original, oversize, rounded corner / flat mount stereo photo measures approx. 6 7/8\" x 3 7/8\" and is mounted on its original, yellow surface Photographer\'s mount. On the front it is identified as being from the \"Expedition of 1874 / 1st Lieut. Geo. M. Wheeler, Corps of Engineers Commanding.\". On the reverse there is printed text on an applied label that identifies the image as No. 35 and titled \"Beaver Lake, Conejos Cañon, Colorado, 9,000 feet above sea-level, and 30 miles from mouth of Cañon”. The photographer is identified as Timothy O\'Sullivan.

The Stereoview pictures members of the Expedition beside an arch at what is identified as \"Grotto Spring\", a mineral formation formed by a spring near the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, Arizona. We are unsure but we do not believe that this formation still exists as we have been unable to uncover any modern pictures of the formation. Behind the grotto we see the Colorado River and in the distance the steep walls of the Grand Canyon.

The official purpose of the Wheeler Survey was to examine the topography, natural resources, and man-made features of the territory, and to prepare detailed maps for both military and general use. But his military superiors made it clear that Wheeler was to pepper his report with support for the Army\'s work in thwarting the dangers of the Southwestern Indian Tribes and their attempts at disturbing settlers and travelers alike. In his final Report Wheeler was expected to make it clear that without the continued and extensive Military presence throughout the Southwest, the Native American Indians still posed a grave danger to peace and prosperity.

This very rare and wonderful, original stereo image is in excellent, original condition. The focus is sharp, the contrast strong and the tonality rich and warm. The images are clean and crisp and the stereo effect is strong when examined through a stereoscope. The card mount is also in excellent condition - generally clean and crisp and well preserved with light soiling and a light water stain on the reverse.

A very rare and very beautiful, 1874 Western Americana Stereo Photograph of Beaver Lake in the Conejos Canyon by Timothy O’Sullivan and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
