Original unissued, cancelled US Revenue document signed by Confederate Major General Lafayette McLaws (1821-1897), who fought at Antietam and Fredericksburg and commanded a division at Gettysburg. After the war, he served as postmaster of Savannah and also as Internal Revenue Collector for the 1st District of Georgia. This item is a Tobacco Dealer\'s receipt for tax paid. It is hole cancelled, but the holes do not effect McLaws\' signature. At the end of each year, revenue collectors, many of whom were political appointees, were required to return unissued certificates. Often, they had been pre-signed. This is one of those.
