This is anabsolutely stunning and rare set of three leather bound and gilt edged volumes,Pictorial Field Book of the Civil War, by the well-respected historian, BensonJ. Lossing. These were published byGeorge Lester Publishing between 1878 and 1880 per their title pages.

Lossing\'s significance as a historian derives from hisdiligence in seeking out primary records, his interviews with participants ofevents and intimates of his biographical subjects, and his care to weigh andcontrast details of his various sources. Washington Irving, with whom hecorresponded, wrote, \"I have been gratified at finding how scrupulouslyattentive you have been to accuracy to facts, which is so essential in writingsof an historical nature.\"

One cannotfind a more complete account of the Civil War. It is profusely illustrated withsteel engravings and picture plates.

The fullleather covers are in fabulous condition for age with only slight wear. The covers and ribbed spines are gilt-engravedand lettered with a beautiful Flag-surrounded eagle on the front. The outer hinges are intact with minimal creasingat heads and tails of the spines. Althoughthe inner hinges are “cracked”, the lovely glossed marble end papers areotherwise in fine shape. The bindingsare very tight. All pages are bound andin excellent condition. The pages aregilt edged on three sides and in excellent, almost unread, condition. The protective tissue at the picture platesis intact. The pages have little, almostno foxing. There are no page tears or dog-ears.

These bookseach measure 9 ¾ inches by 7 inches.Together, they weigh about 10 ½ pounds.
