THE BOOK OF THE BLACK BASS by James A. Henshall M.D. Published by Robert Clark & Co. Cincinnati 1881 (date on title page) First edition. 463 pages plus several pages of advertising. Bound in dark green cloth with gold decorations on the front cover and spine. 8\" X 5 5/8\". With floral endpapers. Presentation copy given by W.W. Dawson to E. Worthington dated Nov. 26, 1884 written in light ink on the flyleaf. (see picture 11) With a frontis plate portrait of the author and 41 full page illustrations and several text illustrations of all kinds of fishing tackle, pictures of fish, and technique for fishing with drawings of fishermen. (see all 12 pictures)


The book is divided into 3 sections with chapters. First section is the scientific description of black bass which includes the largemouth bass, the smallmouth bass and several small bass species. Section 2 is the descriptions of tackle used including rods, reels, artificial lures, hooks and lines, clothing, creels etc. The 3rd section is on technique for fishing for black bass.


In VG+ condition. Tightly bound with ALL leaves, pages and plates. Nothing missing and complete. The hinges are VG+. The covers are bright and unfaded with the spine not faded and with bright gold. The spine ends are very slightly shelf worn about 1/16\". The frontis plate of the author is detached at the top of the spine but still attached at the bottom. It\'s not frayed. NO soiling, stains, marks, foxing, chips, tears etc. on any pages or plates. The front endpaper has a 1944 newspaper clipping neatly mounted that says Dr. Henshall was posthumously made a member of Cincinnati\'s Izaak Walton League. (see picture 12) (see all 12 pictures)


Many consider this book to be the most important and most desirable of all vintage American fishing books and rare as I can\'t find another copy of the 1881 first edition for sale on the internet out of over 100 million used books.
