Fine and scarce antique Stanhope, “From the Cradle to the Grave: Scenes and Incidents in the Life of Gen. James A. Garfield,” circa 1881, approx. ¾” long. In fine, attractive condition, with good clarity.

A particularly historic example of this early optical toy, which anticipated microfilm and the View Master by generations by enclosing a tiny transparent photographic reproduction (i.e., like a slide or filmstrip) in a small capsule which may be viewed like a telescope. The composite image features portraits of Garfield, his wife, and children, as well as Hiram College (where Garfield had studied and later served as president), the fatal shot, the seaside cottage in Elberon, New Jersey, where he died, a deathbed scene, and more.
