This is an original antique 1881 millinery catalog of ladies hats. This catalog is a booklet format of 16 pages plus the covers in the original string binding measuring about 8.75” x 5.5”. The front cover is titled Ye Booke Of Fashions 1881 and With Ye Compliments Of Cannon & Byers, Louisville, KY. This catalog is beautifully illustrated with engravings showing more than 70 different styles of ladies hats. I believe these were primarily straw hats with many having ostrich feathers, ribbons and other elaborate decorations.The firm name Cannon & Byers looks to be overprinted on the front cover. I found another copy of this 1881 catalog at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City which is attributed to the millinery firm of H. Barnard’s Sons of Utica, New York. The lower margin of the catalog indicates this was printed by Donaldson Brothers of Five Points, New York City. I believe these hats were probably manufactured by Barnard or another firm in New York and sold by Cannon & Byers in the Louisville market. This catalog is an original antique issued in 1881. The catalog is fully complete and well intact. The former owner applied three small pieces to the spine and there is some dust staining and general wear. The catalog has a vertical crease from being folded and there is wear to the back cover along the fold line. The inside pages are clean and in very good shape with just some toning to the paper from age and modest. Overall condition is good plus. Email any questions. Thanks for looking.
