A J Downing was an influential landscape gardener considered to be the father of American Landscape Gardening. He edited the magazine “The Horitculturalist” and worked with several other architects and landscapers, including his brother Charles who was a pomologist and A J Davis, architect. Closely related to the Gothic Revival style, this books shows several examples incorporating home, grounds and outbuildings. In this, the fifth edition, the works are updated to reflect increases in pricing, revised lists of trees and shrubbery along changes in style. This edition was edited by Geroge Harney, incorporating the work of Downing and his brother along with the works of Henry Winthrop Sargent.
