Please read description carefully, examine all pics closely as they are part of the description, and ask any questions before buying!Up for sale is an original book titled \"Life and Work of Henry Ward Beecher\", by Thomas W. Knox, published in 1887 by The Hartford Publishing Company, Hartford, Conn., \"by subscription only\". This is a hardbound first edition. More on Henry Ward Beecher below.This edition is original, and has beautiful decorative gilt on the cover and spine. It is in very good condition, there\'s some light wear and tear, shelf and edge wear, spine is lightened, covers show some fading. Blue and white floral end papers, binding is well attached, hinges aren\'t cracked. Nine illustrations in all, including a nice frontispiece of Beecher with a facsimile autograph. No writing, loose pages, dog ears, bad smells, water damage, etc. that I could see. I would ask you to see the pics to get a good idea of it\'s condition, and I would be happy to answer any and all questions, or provide more pictures if needed. I am not a book grader, so see the pics, and you be the judge! This would be an awesome authentic addition to your collection, or a great gift for that collector in your life, and would look great sitting in your library! This measures about 8-1/8\" x 5-3/4\" x 1-3/4\", and has 544 pages.For the Watch Tower collector: Henry Ward Beecher (1813 - 1887) was a well known Brooklyn clergyman, social reformer, and speaker known for his support of the abolition of slavery, among other things. Abraham Lincoln was one of the notables that visited Beecher at his Columbia Heights residence. When Charles Taze Russell realized that the Bible House in Allegheny-Pittsburgh, which had served as headquarters for the Society for 20 years, was not large enough to serve as a suitable center for the developing international work, in 1908 he sent representatives, including J.F. Rutherford, to New York to secure a new headquarters, which Russell himself had previously located. They bought Beecher\'s old four story parsonage at 122-124 Columbia Heights and converted it into a home for the Society\'s headquarters staff of thirty. Pastor Russell used Beecher\'s old study for his own office. The Society also purchased Beecher\'s \"Plymouth Bethel,\" 13-17 Hicks Street, which was remodeled and dedicated in 1909. Concerning these buildings an announcement was made in the Watch Tower: \"The new house we shall call \"Bethel,\" and the new office and auditorium, \"The Brooklyn Tabernacle\"; these names will supplant the Bible House.\" (Jehovah\'s Witnesses in the Divine Purpose page 47-48). An interesting history of the early days of the Society in Brooklyn, although this book is about Henry Ward Beecher. Note in pics 10 and 11 illustrations from the book depicting the two buildings mentioned and acquired by the Society, and pic 12 shows them after remodel as shown in Jehovah\'s Witnesses in the Divine Purpose and the 1910 Souvenir Report. Not only does this book look nice in any library, it\'s a fine addition to any collection. The WTB&TS has mentioned Beecher several times either in regards to the history of these buildings, or quoted outright in relation to scriptural points.
