Outstanding and VERY RARE, Large Size, 1888, Benjamin Harrison & Levi Morton Political Campaign \"Paper Balloon Form\" Parade Lantern with fantastic Log Cabin and Portrait graphics. The Lantern retains its original, wood and wire frame with the original candle holder.

This wonderful piece of Political Americana is a Globe Shaped Paper Lantern that measures approx. 18” in diameter when expanded into a \"globe\" shape. The Paper Lantern is made up of 8 vertical sections. Each section has a separate illustration - one with a portrait of Harrison, one with a portrait of Morton, two with Campaign Flags in the form of American Flags that read \"Harrison & Morton\", one with a GAR Medal and crossed Flags, one with a simple Star design and two with fantastic Log Cabin designs that read at the top \"Protection/\'We will support the interests of America\'\" and below the Cabin \"1840 - 1888 / Tippecanoe & Morton Too\".

The delicate, paper construct carries the mark of the manufacturer - Sprague & French of Norwalk, Ohio.

The Parade Lantern comes with its original, collapsible wire frame which an be inserted into the center of the Paper Lantern and expanded creating the “Gobe” / “Balloon” form. There is also a candle holder at the base of the frame into which a candle could be placed and lit for an “candle light” parade.

This delicate all paper lantern is in remarkably good condition - the colors are bright and vibrant and the Lantern is essentially intact. There are some small spots of staining and some soiling as well as some small tears and separations. There is only one large tear which has been repaired using fully reversible, Document repair tissue.

As you can see from the scans below, we did “partially” expand the Paper Lantern but did not want to risk damaging and/or tearing the delicate paper by fully expanding the construct. We would suggest that if the purchaser wished to display the Lantern fully expanded, it should likely be professionally linen packed to give strength and flexibility to the paper “skin”.

When found, these 19th century Paper Parade Lanterns are usually in deplorable condition with major damage and loss. The Parade Lantern offered here, shile certainly not in mint condition, is well preserved and certainly a candidate for a full, professional restoration.

This wonderful, 1888 Harrison / Morton, Presidential Campaign Paper Torch Light Parade Lantern is attractive and extremely rare and, fully restored and preserved it would be a centerpiece for any collection of 19th century Presidential Campaign items or Political Memorabilia!!
