PIONEERSON THEIR WAY THROUGH MASHONALAND AND MATABELELAND

TAKENDURING THE PIONEER TREK 1890

I have scanned and provided photos of the photograph. Thephoto has been placed affixed to a page, ready to be published nearly 125 years ago. On the back of the photograph there issome writing in pencil which says “Wagon train on way to Mashonaland 1890” andpresumably the writer is William Harvey Brown (1862-1913), also known as ‘Curio’ Brown(anearly Mayor of Salisbury) and writer of On the South African Frontier, \'the adventures and observations of an American in Mashonaland and Matabeleland\'. The book can be found and downloaded at hathitrust dot org and is a fascinating read.

The photograph is taken by C.A. Orr and his name appears bottom right. The prominent wagon shows an istrument for viewing an eclipse (which was also happening at that time!). Other wagons and trains in the distance.

I don’t think this photo was used in the book, and waskept in a museum in Lawrence, Kansas (Brown’s hometown – he died in the formerRhodesia). Any questions, please feel free to ask. I will also be saleing another photo, of a Mashona village from the same person and time.

The picture will be well packed and protected and comesfrom a smoke free home. I always repay excess postage.
