Throughout the summer,President Lincoln actively sought the support of antislavery, pro-Unionistimmigrants. Sigel, always popular with the German immigrants, was a goodcandidate to advance this plan. He was promoted tobrigadier generalon August 7, 1861, to rank from May17, one of a number of earlypoliticalgeneralsendorsed byLincoln.

Sigel served underBrig. GenNathanielLyonin the capture ofthe ConfederateCamp JacksoninSt. Louis and at theBattle of Wilson\'s Creek, where hiscommand was routed after making a march around the Confederate camp andattacking from the rear. Sigel conducted the retreat of the army after thedeath of General Lyon.

Sigel was promoted tomajor general on March 21, 1862. He served as a division commander in theShenandoahValleyand foughtunsuccessfully against Maj. Gen.Thomas J.\"Stonewall\" Jackson, who managed to outwit and defeat thelarger Union force in a number of small engagements. He commanded theI CorpsinMaj. Gen.John Pope\'sArmy ofVirginiaat theSecond Battle of Bull Run, another Uniondefeat, where he was wounded in the hand.
