This ephemera comes from the estate of one of the earliest families to establish roots in Sudbury, Vermont. This paper relates to either Major Barnard Ketcham or his descendants. Major Ketcham, who built the Vail mansion in 1826, served in the Battle of Plattsburgh. This historical ephemerafollows the lineage of the Ketcham and Vail surnames and reveals these individual\'slives, struggles, and business pursuitsbeginning in Sudbury & Rutland County, Vermont.

Grouping of old saved papers from the Ketcham estate ~ dating from the 1890s. Gives a glimpse into their lives and pursuits. At this stage in the game - most of the papers contained in this lot pertain to Phenner Vail.

Phenner Vail is the son of Phenner P. Vail and Angeline Ketcham. Angeline being the daughter of Barnard Ketcham. The P.P. Vail (father) died in 1875. Phenner Vail Jr. took over theVail farm & house. At this time he had an estranged marriage to Sarah Goffe of Albany, New York. They would divorce by 1902 when he remarried. Some papers in this group relate to their marriage.

His carefully stored letters fromfirst wife Sarah Goffe are being sold in a separate sale.
