New York cartoonThis is a great color lithograph single sheet only, published on May 7, 1892 as the cover of Judge, a popular political humor magazine of that era. The print is 120 years old! It measures 10 x 13.5 inches in size. It has some light grime and edge tears (see photo) but the main image is in fine condition, in attractive color. The cartoon shows Tammany Hall’s political boss Richard Croker as a huge thug garbed in a king’s robe and crown, with the crown topped by a bottle of rum, and a shamrock medal around his neck. Croker holds a “Party Lash” and looks down on a tiny figure of Grover Cleveland, who is wearing a halo. In the foreground is a young woman representing New York. She is unconscious, tied to a stump marked “Tammany,” and tied up with bonds marked “Bad Laws / Thieving Judge / Railroad Steal / Police Corruption / Infamous Legislation / Partisan Inspector Bill / Filthy Speeches / Stolen Senate.” The cartoon has the title and caption of:Responsible for New York’s Disgrace.KING CROKER — “You’re a nice reformer, ain’t you?
