For your consideration is an excellent example of a Sterling Silver Bachelor\'s Teapot, made by George Maudsley Jackson who was associated with Josiah Williams & Company. George Maudsley Jackson was an extremely prolific maker of sterling silver objects, and historical records report that he was one of the largest manufacturers of sterling silver at the turn of the century. The teapot measures 7.5 inches long and 5.5 inches in height, all the while tipping the scales at 249 grams. Overall this teapot is in excellent condition with only a few scuffs, scratches and pinhead-sized dents in various areas around the body and base. The hallmarks are clearly visible along the side and also stamped into the underside of the lid. The hinges function extremely well and the lid closes perfectly. The handle is also in excellent condition, and there is slight pitting of the silver where the ebonized wood meets the sterling silver. Many of these handles break or fall off or become loose, but somehow this handle has survived and is in exceptional condition. This fact, combined with the unbelievably clean interior of the teapot, leads me to believe that this teapot was only used very sparingly for the brewing of tea. There is a small amount of silver tarnish in the crevices where the spout meets the body, as the person who last cleaned this teapot apparently overlooked this area. No big deal, but I believe in full disclosure and exhaustive detail in my descriptions.
In researching this object, I have come across several examples of George Maudsley Jackson\'s bachelor teapots. Some examples had the wave pattern repousse along the lower half of the teapot. Some examples had a small border of floral repousse along the top of the lid. But never have I seen an example with such an ornate floral repousse covering the entire body of the teapot with the monogram shields. The work is extremely fine and hand-chased, which becomes increasingly rare as these artisans became older and phased out of the manufacture of sterling silver. At this time, the industry was moving from hand-made items to engine-turned items, and the laborious process of hand-detailing silver objects simply fell out of fashion. This teapot seems to perfectly capture this time of transition, as certain elements are hand-made while other elements are engine-turned. The lid and the base are obviously stamped by a machine, and the hinges were undoubtedly manufactured with the aid of a machine. However, the crimped pattern surrounding the lid and the floral repousse are certainly hand-made and show extremely fine attention to detail. The flower petals and leaves show amazing detail and are hand-made and bright-cut. There is shadowing around the flowers that was engraved directly into the sterling silver, giving the teapot a three-dimensional quality. The wave patterns along the lower half of the teapot seem to have been stamped out with the aid of a pattern, as they are identical to the waves in similar GMJ teapots I have seen. So, in conclusion, I believe this teapot was more expensive due to the hand-made and bright cut details along the body and the monogram shields.
