The \"Letters\" in this book were originally written by David Ross Locke (Pseudonym Petroleum V. Nasby). \"Nasby\" character was a Copperhead and Democrat loudly championed the cause of the Confederate States of Americaonward, but did little to actively help it. After this fictional character was conscriptedinto the Union Army he deserted to the Confederates, joining the fictional \"Pelican Brigade.\" However, he alsodeserted the Confederate Army and was back in civilian life by the end of the Civil War.

The Nasby Letters, although written in the semi-literate spelling used by other humorists of the time, were a sophisticated work of ironic fiction. They were intended to rally support for the Union cause and Abraham Lincoln reported loved the Nasby Letters andquoted them frequently.

Has Wear. I feel it is in Remarkable Condition for being over 120 years old. Name stamped on first page. Pages and cover are secure with handling, creasing and age wear and some discoloration including a stain on the back cover. From my smoke-free home.
