1895 Sterling Shaving Mug Of Actor Frederick Warde Silent Film Star Elks Bpoe For Sale
UNIQUE HISTORIC 1895 STERLING SHAVING MUG. This shaving mug was presented to the silent film star Frederick Warde 1851-1935 by the Seattle Lodge #92 of the BPOE on April 10th 1895. If you google Frederick Warde BPOE you will be lead to a "google books" notation where it explains how Mr. Ward was popular for visiting Seattle and producing his plays there which included Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and how he was presented a loving cup on stage by the mayor. There is also a Wikipedia article on Mr. Ward in regards to his career.
This shaving mug was made by Whiting Silver and is marked on the bottom Sterling 4107 along with the Whiting logo stamp. It is 3 1/2 inches tall, 3 inches in diameter excluding the handle, and 4 1/2 inches across including the handle. The mug weights 193 grams, there are some minor dents here and there, andtwo dents/bendsin the foot rim. I would guess that this was used somewhat as a shaving mug. It has been polished but not buffed and all of the engraving as you can see is still crisp and deep and there is lots of detail in the handleandstill signs of a gold wash to the interior of the mug.
