Here you have a Civil War Union Veteran’s Grand Army of the Republic 31st National Encampment Souvenir Medal. This encampment was held in Buffalo, New York during 1897. The medal features a Buffalo, symbolic of the City, and a GAR Star Logo. It is maker marked and in excellent condition.

The 31st Encampment Medal the GAR 5 Point Star with Buffalo embossed to the center with a shield flanked by Flags. The points of the star depict crossed swords, rifles, cannon barrels and an Infantry Horn and Navy Anchor. Eagles are mounted along the circumference of the star.

The ornate, exquisitely designed Medal is suspended from a pin mount featuring a Buffalo and a banner that reads, Souvenir. On the reverse is an early needle pin and cradle. Embossed on the reverse is the maker, Heeren Brothers (I believe) of Pittsburgh. The medal features the late 19th Century dark finish so typical of medals and decorations. The GAR Medal measures 1.5 by 2.875 inches. It is non-magnetic.
