FOLLOWING THE EQUATOR by Mark Twain Published by the American Publishing Co. New York 1897 712 pages bound in dark blue cloth with an elephant on the front cover and fancy gold decorations on the spine. 9 1/8\" X 6 1/4\". First edition, first issue, first state with the title page printed in black with a green leafed tree. Dated 1897 on the title page. Has only one publisher mentioned. With a printers or binders notation of number 11 on page 161. In the original first state binding. With 193 illustrations by famous illustrators such as Dan Beard, founder of the Boy Scouts. With a frontis photo of Twain. In this book he visited the Hawaiian Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania, India, South Africa, Rhodesia, Fiji Islands etc. (see all 12 pictures)Has all leaves and pages (collated). With all leaves and pages in VG+ condition except the rear free endpaper is slightly frayed on the edge. The covers and spine are very bright and with only slightly faded. Very slight shelf wear to the spine ends. Has an old torn bookplate on the front endpaper with the owners name. (see picture 12) The frontis tissue guard is lightly foxed. The only real problem is the end sheets across the inner hinges are split but the covers still hold tight to the binding with the underlying cheese cloth. Otherwise the leaves and binding are very tight. No loose pages. Not shaken. The inner hinges can easily be repaired by any good book binder. (see all 12 pictures)
