1897 Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Bronze Four Generations Medal

Here I am offering a very collectable example of this historic commemorative medal issued for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.

These penny-sized medals were actually struck in 1895 then issued officially in 1897 for the Queen\'s historic60th anniversary of her accession to the throne. The design was also used for commercial advertising purposes, most notably for Remington Typewriters.

The obverse design was by H.GRUEBER (signed lower left rim). It shows the conjugated heads of QueenVictoria, The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), Prince George (laterKing George V) and Prince Edward (later King Edward VIII) all facing left.I have included an image of a contemporary photograph of them for you to compare the faces. Above is a crown and below, two sprays of leaves tied with ribbon and the date,1897.

The legend reads on the obverse FOUR GENERATIONS OF THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY. Around the edgeat 8 o\'clock it reads 10 SEP 95 H.GREUBER & CO. 1897 37 SNOWHILL LONDONE.C. The reverse has a centre line of three shields: Ireland, England, andScotland. The rather androgynous putto-like figure on the Irish harp is particularly well-endowed on these, I always think. Maybe the engraver was having a little poke at Victorian prudery? There is a crown above and flowers below the shields. The legend reads THEDIAMOND JUBILEE above a crown. The legend around the rim reads TO COMMEMORATE THE60TH YEAR OF HER MAJESTY\'S REIGN 1837-97. It is medal orientated with a reedededge. All in all a really rather unusual medal with a very finely struck design andfont. The portraits are striking in quality. Overall this example is in very fine collectable condition with a small amount of wear as shown. Please note it looks as though it has been cleaned before it came into my possession. It will however, recover from this in time. Meanwhile, both sides have an iridescent red glow which, funnily enough, is not unattractive, even to this hard-boiled numismatist.

The diameter is 32.2mmand it weighs 12g.

This will be a low start sale as usual. Please note the photograph is not part of the listing.
