Rodolphe Topffer was a Swiss teacher, author, painter, cartoonist and caricaturist. He is best known for his illustrated books which are often seen as one of the earliest examples of European comics.

Paris educated, Topffer worked as a schoolteacher and ran a boarding school where he entertained students with his caricatures. He began to publish works in 1837 which were similar in style to modern comics and graphic novels. Topffer published several of these works and wrote theoretical essays on them.

CONDITION

Uniformly bound in quarter calf bindings with gilt detailing to spines.Original paper wraps bound in.Externally, smart with some rubbing particularly at spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright with scattered patches of spotting. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED.
