18TH CENTURY GEORGE II 1736 LONDON STERLING / SOLID SILVER BEER TANKARD / JUG
On offer is a magnificent 18th Century George II sterling / solid silver tankard / jug for ale / beer. Spout to jug probably added later by the Victorians. With scroll and floral motif and blank cartouche to personalise. Gilt lined with hallmarks (lid and body) for London 1736 by the makerRichard Bayley (R and B spaced out). This rare makers mark was unregistered and the hallmarks have subsequently been cancelled (crossed) by an assay office, but the item is clearly solid silver and also fully tested as such - GUARANTEED.
Height tankard 17 cm (large). Weight an impressive 600 grams. Capacity well over 1 pint. Condition excellent. Not sure, but there may have been a small solder repair to hinge of the lid - fully secure and in working order.
One will not find a finer piece of affordable 18th Century English silver still of practical use today - for example, how to impress your friends in a pub!
