Click to View Image Album Welcome to our sale. You are invited to offer on this very old primitive and folk art creation from the 18th or 19th century. This thick solid hardwood round was constructed using wooden peg (not nails). Our research indicates that this type of construction in furniture was generally stopped during the 18th century, but is was continued a bit longer in some European countries. In wooden peg construction to be authentic and old, the pegs should not be perfectly round, but off-round and even oval (which these are). Additionally the pegs should protrude from the surface (due to wood shrinking) which these pegs do. On the back side, there are two iron pins inserted between the wooden braces (which we believe is normally found on cheese press molds) and somewhere over the years two metal screw eyes were added on top, so the piece could be hung up for display. Some minor cracks and authentic worm holes in the wood as to be expected. It is our guess that this piece dates from the late 18th century to the mid 19th century? The carving on the top is probably meant to be a pig, but it also could be a bear? This is a well used piece in great condition for its age. Measurements are: about 10\" - 10 1/2\" in diameter, approximately 2 1/2\" thick total, and weight is about 3 lbs 8 oz.
