$405.00

IMPORTANT ANTIQUE TIBETAN LAMA\'s MONASTICTEACHING THRONE RUG (called \"Khangama\"), Central Asia, Tibetan high plateau, 1st half of the19th Century (possibly even18th century?), and coming invery good alloveroriginalcondition for the collector. The exact size is:2\'-1\" x 2\'-4\" (61 x 71cm).A very, veryold Tibetan monastic weaving, certainly from the 1st half of the 19th century and quite possibly even earlier(?). No other known published examplewith this exact use of adesign poolin the rug book literature. It isquite unusual to see the crossed red \"Vajra\",or \"Dorje\", motifintentionally placed off center a bit with a few small swastika motifs as secondary elements, both being ancient sacred symbols of Tibetan Buddhism. It is interesting to note that if one sits on this rug in a meditative position and you look down slightly between the legs, this crossed \"vajra\" symbol is staring up at you. These types of small square rugs were made for high lamas as throne cushion covers and were usedduring esoteric teachings to student monks. This unique specimen is all wool in construction withlanolin-rich pile. The top and bottom endings, and the sides, are all original and complete. This particularly rare example shows some wear in the field consummate with it being used as a sitting rug over a long period of time, and probably handed down through generations of venerable monastery teachers.Originally it was bound around the perimeterwith ared cloth material that has dissipated over time with another cloth having replaced the original as a cover for the reverse and it now being tattered from age use, too. Upon close examination, one will see remnants of the originalred border material (see photo 10).This important Tibetan textile artifact exudes both serenity and power and positive vibrations. A meditative wall hanging for the home or office. Lucky the winning buyer who will use it for their own Buddhist practice.
