A Great Colonial Era Circa 1750-1790 American Floor or Table Standing Rushlight Holder With PennyFeet!

This Colonial period rushlight dates 1750-1790, and is a fantastic specimen of a combination lighting device, all hand wrought, blacksmith made.

This design can be seen in several reference books on both early wrought iron. For similar examples illustrated in books, see "Furniture Treasury" by Wallace Nutting, "The Sorber Collection" by Don Plummer, "Fire and Light in the Home Pre-1820" by Caspall and "Antique Iron" by Schiffer.

The piece consists of a tri-legged tab penny-footed stand measuring just under 26" tall, and the center mechanisms of a rushlight/candle holder.

Rushlights used their closed jaws to secure rush reed which were soaked in grease or oil and burnt for illumination. The opposite candlecup was used to also support a tallow or wax candle for illumination.

To allow the user to adjust the height of the working action of the device, the blacksmith who created it worked in a commonly seen \'spring loaded\' design that puts pressure on the shaft, while also allowing enough ease to work the piece into place.

Take a moment to click the images and you\'ll see great signs of design and period construction.

Just a super piece of Colonial Iron that\'s certain to look wonderful in a period decorum or collection.

Up for 5 days with and a low starting offer.
