A GRISAILLE AND GILT EUROPEAN SUBJECT TEA BOWL AND SAUCER
CIRCA 1750
Each piece finely decorated en grisaille and in flesh tones with a gallant serenading his female companion with a guitar while she holds up a letter, both seated on rockwork, a hound at their feet, Cupid about to shoot his arrow above their heads on the left, and the masts of ships in the far distance on the right. A saucer with this design is are illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelain des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1960, p. 192, figs. 8.23.
