18th Century Colonial DAR 100% Silk Gown and Petticoat Dress Historical Costume:
$649.99

For your consideration is a stunning 100% silk taffeta lavender gown with a matching petticoat, cut in the \"English\" or pleated-back style. The bodice and sleeves are lined in linen and the neckline and sleeve ends have been trimmed with a box-pleated self-fabric. The gown is 100% hand sewn and draped and constructed just as it would have been down in the 18th century. There are no closures on this gown; it is meant to pin closed down the center front. The petticoat has a cotton wasitband with ties. This gown would be appropriate for 1770-1785 events, for Revolutionary War reenacting, DAR, or as a historically accurate colonial period costume.

PLEASE NOTE that the kerchief, cap, breastknot bow, and other accessories shown in the photos are NOT included. This listing is for the GOWN AND MATCHING PETTICOAT ONLY.

This gown and petticoat are ENTIRELY 100% hand sewn and constructed using period techniques and stitches. As such, the gown displays all the characteristics of an original, extant gown. The front/side bodice pieces are carefully top-stitched, and the trim was pleated and applied by hand. The top of the gown skirts have not been trimmed inside, but have been pleated, sewn down, and then left to hang free inside the bodice to help \"poof\" out the skirts. Keep in mind, then, that the \"finishes\" on this gown are appropriate to the 18th century, but may not be what you\'d typically expect from a 21st-century \"costume.\"

Please be aware that this gown MUST be worn over proper period undergarments (stays) in order to fit as it should. Sizing is a bit adjustable, as 18th-century gowns were, because the front pins closed and can be overlapped a couple of inches. The petticoat sides can also be overlapped quite a bit for flexibility. Sizing details are as follows:

  • bust: 33.5\" to 35 \"
  • shoulder to waist: 15\"
  • bicep: 13\"
  • waist: 29.75\" to 31\"
  • waist to hem: 40\"
  • petticoat waist: 32\" (each side is 16\", so the total is very flexible, as the sides can be overlapped as much or as little as you like)
  • petticoat length: 38.25\"

PLEASE READ CONDITION NOTES CAREFULLY BEFORE offerDING, AS I CANNOT ACCEPT RETURNS ON THIS ITEM.THIS GOWNIS BEING SOLD AS-IS.

  • Please note that this gown is pre-owned andthus show some signs of wear. There is some wear along the bottom of the hem, but really it is hardly noticeable, especially because of the sheen of the silk taffeta.
  • There is some minor underarm staining that is visible on the outside of the gown where the silk has softened and discolored ever so slightly. As this is right under the arm when the gown is on the body, this isn\'t very noticeable and you have to look pretty hard to see it. The inside of the bodice, however, does show the staining more, but again, this is inside on the lining. If you\'d like close-up detail photos of this, please just let me know and I\'ll be happy to provide them for you.
  • Both gown and petticoat were cut to be worn over a VERY small hoop, so the hemline is a tab bit longer at the immediate sides than in the front and back. When I put this on the mannequin to take photos, however, I didn\'t put a hoop under it and I didn\'t even notice the hem difference, it\'s that minimal. VERY small hip pads (we\'re talking 2\" at most) could certainly be used to fill out the hips ever so slightly if you think you need them, but again, I honestly don\'t think you do. You could also pull up the skirts with \"a la polonaise\" ties if you\'d like, which would also make the gown\'s hemline a non-issue.
