18th Century Engraved Norwegian Powder Horn, Folklore, Mythical Birds & Animals:
$795.00

18th Century engraved Norwegian (Scandinavian) bovinepowder horn. This flattened powder horn has a carved wooden plug in the spout and a wood base, fastened with old iron nails. There are engravings on both sides of this horn. On one side is a boundingdeer with antlers and a leaf in its mouth being chased by two large dogs or wolves. Behind the deer is a large floral engraving. On the other side is a large bird with three heads - a mythical creature from Norwegian folklore. The beaks of the bird\'s heads are holding sprigs, or branches, with a couple of smaller flying birds by the beaks of the three-headed bird. There are plants on each side of the 3-headed bird\'s feet.

This old powder horn is in excellent condition, showing wear consistent with its age and use. It has a very nice patina. Two of the iron nails holding the wood base have round heads - these are probably later, although old, replacements. Overall straight line length of the powder horn is about 8 inches (20 cm) from tip of wood base to tip of plug in the spout. The oval shaped wood base measures 3 by 1 1/4 inches. This powder horn is unique and artistically done.

To Our International Customers: We ship via the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and usually offer two shipping options:

First Class Mail International - shipping at less cost, but, according to the USPS, delivery time “varies” and can sometimes take several weeks. Also, there is no package tracking and shipping insurance is not available.

Priority Mail International - shipping cost is more, but delivery is usually within ten days of shipment. Provides partial insurance coverage and tracking of the shipment through the U.S. Postal system. For more expensive items, we usually require shipping via Priority Mail International and may add the cost of full shipping insurance to the cost of shipping.

Customs: The customs form we fill out for your shipment is marked “merchandise”, with the actual price you paid for the item as the value. We always include a packing slip with your purchase that identifies the item and the actual amount you paid for your purchase. Note: Postal regulations do not allow us to mark your purchase as “gift”. Customs fees are not included in the shipping cost and are the buyer’s responsibility.
