18th Century Solid Silver Russian Old Believers Traveling Icon Kazanskaya RARE:

I purchesed this piece from the estate of a wealthy Russian Doctor who recently passed. He was a serious collector of Russian silver and Russian Icon works of art including this one from a 9000 sq ft residential estate in Encino california. I do not know anything about this piece or other icons, only that this one tests for solid silver and it is most likely from the 18th century. This plaque is slightly warped and has a wonderful original patina which is black in some areas and dark gray in others. The casting is no doubt an early lost wax process which is proper for the period. This piece could have made its way to France or Italy as there is a small hallmark of (grapes) on the shoulder (left side) which was used in France as a discharge mark during the latter part of the 18th century and a very similar hallmark was used in Italy around 1810 and could be an import mark. This plaque weighs 46 grams. This piece must have been pretty special to its original owner as most of them were made in brass or bronze.
