18th century DAR cotton colonial gown robe a l\'anglaise ~ hand-sewn costume:
$365.00

For your consideration is a lovely reproduction cotton print 18th century gown in the \"robe a l\'anglaise\" or fitted back style. This gown is 100% hand sewn. It includes interior ties so you can wear the gown draped up \"a la polonaise\" or leave the skirts left hanging down plain. There are no closures on this gown; it is meant to pin closed down the center front. The fabric is a reproduction cotton from a DAR Museum line and has a gorgeous, crisp drape to it, and the bodice and sleeves are lined in linen. The gown would be appropriate for 1775-1785 events, like Revolutionary War reenacting, DAR, or as a historically accurate colonial period costume.

The pink petticoat shown in the pictures is NOT INCLUDED.

This gown is constructed using period techniques and stitches, and as such, it displays all the characteristics of an original, extant gown. The back pleats and bodice pieces are carefully top-stitched, as are the pleats of the gown skirts. The top of the gown skirts have not been trimmed on the inside, but have been pleated, sewn down, and then left to hang free on the interior bodice to help \"poof\" out the skirts. Keep in mind, then, that the \"finishes\" on this gown are appropriate to the 18th century, but may not be what you\'d typically expect from a 21st-century \"costume.\"

Please be aware that this gown MUST be worn over proper period undergarments (stays) in order to fit as it should. Sizing is a bit adjustable, as 18th-century gowns were, because the front pins closed and can be overlapped a couple of inches. Sizing details are as follows:

  • bust: 30\" min to 31.75\" max
  • shoulder to waist: 16\"
  • bicep: 12.25\"
  • waist: 24.5\" min to 27.75\" max
  • waist to hem: 38\"

PLEASE READ CONDITION NOTES CAREFULLY BEFORE offerDING, AS I CANNOT ACCEPT RETURNS ON THIS ITEM. THIS GOWN IS BEING SOLD AS-IS.

  • Please note that this gown and petticoat are pre-owned, but have only been worn a couple of times and thus show only very minimal signs of wear. The gown was washed and ironed after it\'s last wearing, so it is clean.
  • The only wear issues I can find are along the top neckline where the shoulder straps meet the back bodice, where the lining has frayed a teensy bit. This can be easily clipped away by the new owner and DOES NOT affect the structural integrity of the gown. The other wear issue is that the linen lining seam on the inside of the bodice has pulled away slightly for about 1 inch on the interior of the bodice. This is NOT noticeable when the gown is worn because it is concealed inside, and it does NOT affect the structural integrity of the gown, either. I think this happened when I washed it, and it can certainly be mended if you\'d like to do so.
  • This one of the earliest gowns I ever made completely by hand years ago, and thus has a couple of very minor \"learning\" mistakes. The biggest of these is that I pieced the ends of the sleeves with small triangular inserts to make them a teeny bit more open and comfortable. This type of piecing is ENTIRELY accurate to the period (which is why I did it) and it is not very noticeable at all when the gown is worn because of the denseness of the floral print.
